Remembering Dr. Cleo Malone
For those who don’t know who he was, Cleo Malone was the Executive Director of the Palavra Tree, Inc., a community-based Alcohol and Drug Abuse Intervention Recovery and Prevention Agency since 1985, located on So. 43 rd St., San Diego. But the Palavra Tree is much more than just another program for providing these kinds of services to the community. It is unique and it’s all because of Cleo Malone.
During the next weeks and months we’ll read and hear all about these services, how they were developed and how they are still carried out by its exceptional staff and community volunteers.
THE MAN CLEO MALONE
But this is about the Man, the person behind all the services and programs and contributions to the community. It was his vision and passion that made it possible to build this service agency into a community Institution of rare accomplishments.
In 1985-86, after Cleo became familiar with the community and how its youth, in particular, were being negatively affected by the overwhelming presence of neighborhood liquor stores and other locally run markets selling tobacco, liquor and drug products and drug paraphernalia to youth –after he witnessed these activities happening day after day without any controls by city or county or other agencies, he decided to do something about it. He decided to develop some programs to stop this practice.
